The Method: Add the Complement

Instead of subtracting, you find the "complement" of the number being subtracted (subtract each digit from 9, and the last from 10). Then, you add this complement to the first number and ignore the leading '1'.

Example: 532 - 178

  1. Find Complement of 178:
    • First digit (1): 91=89 - 1 = 8
    • Second digit (7): 97=29 - 7 = 2
    • Last digit (8): 108=210 - 8 = 2
    • The complement is 822.
  2. Add the Complement: 532+822=1354532 + 822 = 1354.
  3. Adjust the Result: Remove the leading '1' from the sum.
