Sopantyadvayamantyam Sutra

Share:

"Sopantyadvayamantyam," which means "The ultimate and twice the penultimate," is a specific but powerful shortcut for solving certain fractional equations.

The Rule

This sutra is used to instantly solve equations in the form: `1/(x + a) + 1/(x + b) = 0`.

For such equations, the solution is found by setting the sum of the denominators to zero.

Example: 1/(x - 3) + 1/(x - 5) = 0

  1. Sum of Denominators: (x - 3) + (x - 5) = 0
  2. Combine Terms: 2x - 8 = 0
  3. Solve for x: 2x = 8, so x = 4.

⚗️Equation Lab

Enter 'a' and 'b' for the equation `1/(x+a) + 1/(x+b) = 0`.

1 / (x +) + 1 / (x +) = 0
